Queimada workshop in Santiago de Compostela
Description
As part of the culture of the city of Santiago de Compostela we find the Queimada, a strong alcoholic drink very present in the festivities and celebrations. The rite and incantation of the Galician Queimada is a magical tradition that is still performed today, of unknown origin, some say that it began to be popular in Galicia in Celtic times and others attribute it to the Middle Ages. At night, in the dark, by the light of the flame of the Queimada itself, an incantation is recited while stirring the alcohol with sugar with a ladle.
What we are going to do?
We will meet at the Quintana de Vivos square from where we will move to the place where we will perform the ceremony. We will sit around a table with a large earthenware bowl in the centre. At that moment, the help of a Galician Meiga (name given to witches in this region) will come into action, who will explain to us how to make the Queimada. Water, earth and fire, the three most important elements of nature, will be present in the making of this drink. The Meiga will recite the incantation, traditionally known as "conxuro da queimada", with which we will call for good luck just before tasting the drink. After the ritual we will go on to a tasting of the freshly prepared Queimada.
