Guided visit to the Museo do Pobo Galego (Museum of the Galician People)
Description
The former convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval, abandoned after the disentailment and recovered in the 1970s to become today the Museo do Pobo Galego and Pantheon of Illustrious Galicians. Located on a hill outside the walls of the historic city, next to the road along which the pilgrims arrived at Compostela, it conserves an extensive collection that will take you deep into Galician tradition: the sea, trades, the countryside, clothing, music, trades, art, society, traditions, festivals and popular architecture. It also has sections on Galician archaeology, painting and sculpture.
What we are going to do?
We will tour Galicia from the same place, with a local guide who will explain everything we need to know about Galicia and its culture. The tour will start right at the entrance of the museum, where we will meet the guide. We will start the visit in the sea room, to see the typical Galician boats. We will then continue to the country rooms where we will discover the traditional types of cultivation in Galicia. We will continue our visit through the room of the trades: the milkmen, the itinerant trades, the shoemakers... We continue to a particularly outstanding and famous place in the museum: the triple helicoidal baroque staircase, a unique example of the local baroque. Then we reach the basket and weaving room, which was one of the most important economic activities in Galicia. Finally, we will delve into the world of folklore in the traditional music rooms and finish with a visit to the church of the old convent.
