Tour of the three temples: the Ignatian route, from San Sebastian
Description
Saint Ignatius was born in Loyola, in a 14th century manor house where a basilica was later built in the 16th century in his honour by order of the King. After his enlightenment he began a pilgrimage from his home that ended in Montserrat, near Barcelona, but led him to visit several shrines and hermitages along the way, such as the Hermitage of La Antigua (in Zumarraga), the Sanctuary of Arantzazu (in Oñati) and the Sanctuary of Loyola (in Azpeitia). This pilgrimage route is known as the “Route of the Three Temples”.
What we are going to do?
We will take a guided tour that focuses on the trajectory of Saint Ignatius from his birth to the founding of the Society of Jesus. We will depart from San Sebastian by private organised transport and will first visit the spectacular Basilica of Loyola, the family home and birthplace of Saint Ignatius. We will continue our way to the Hermitage of La Antigua in Zumarraga (where Saint Ignatius made a stop during his pilgrimage) and we will stop for lunch in the town of Oñati. In the afternoon, we will visit the third temple, the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, located in a spectacular gorge, rebuilt in the 1950s and a showcase of modern religious art at its best, awarded with several international prizes.
