Discover the "abarcas", the footwear of the Menorcan farmers
Description
Magí Bonet is the name of one of the few artisans who still handcrafts the famous sandal known as "abarca", a shoe that has a peasant origin and that has been paraded on the most famous fashion catwalks for some years now. It is worn by everyone, young and old, everywhere, at parties, in the countryside or on the beach. The abarcas have a long history that is lost in time, we can see a drawing from the 19th century in which we can see a shoe made with skins from different parts of the animal for greater resistance and comfort. Later, with the arrival of tyres on the island, the farmers did not hesitate to make a sole that would insulate them more from the ground and make them even more resistant. From then until now, the abarca has conquered the whole world and has diversified into equally comfortable and very attractive models. Magí is also a great master of esparto grass. We will visit him in his small workshop in Ciutadella so that he can show us all the articles he makes and his traditions.
