Description
Courtyards are one of the most valuable elements of stately homes, symbols of power and prestige. Thanks to the courtyard, the entrance of light was allowed, but also the distribution of the different rooms. It was also a social symbol where the power of its owners could be contemplated and imagined. Made up of different parts, all the courtyards in the city form the same image: an entrance, called the "forà" portal, a hallway, a courtyard surrounded by columns, a vegetable garden, the study and finally the stairs that led to the main floor, i.e. the house. Thanks to documentation, we know that there were around five hundred courtyards in the city of Palma. Unfortunately, today only around one hundred remain, some of them are still private properties, but many others have been converted into hotels, cafés or belong to public bodies. During the visit we will explain the importance and elements of 11 patios and we will enter two of them: Ca la Gran Cristiana and the Casal Solleric.
What we are going to do?
Guided tour of Palma de Mallorca to get to know and visit some of the patios of the manor houses. The visit will start in Plaça de Cort, just in front of the olive tree, where we will have a brief historical introduction of the city and the typical architecture of the patios. Then we will start a route through Palma that will take us to visit some of the most important patios of the city.
Itinerary
The visit will begin in Plaça de Cort, just in front of the olive tree. We will then head towards Calle Can Savellà where we will see three courtyards. Later we will visit the courtyard of the Museum of Mallorca known as Ca la Gran Cristiana and, in Morey Street, we will see three more courtyards. We will continue to the Estudi General and finish at the Casal Solleric, on the Paseo del Born.
