Description
Segovia, located in central Spain, in the province of Castile-León, with its old town and Roman Aqueduct declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Centuries of settlement have resulted in a rich architectural legacy, including medieval walls, Romanesque churches, an ancient royal palace and a Gothic cathedral. The iconic ancient Roman Aqueduct, built in the centre of the city to bring water from the neighbouring Sierra de Guadarrama, has more than 160 arches, mostly in dry-jointed granite, and towers over Plaza Azoguejo in the city centre. The other city we will visit is Ávila, the provincial capital of the region of Ávila, also a municipality in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is situated along the course of the river Adaja in an area of rolling hills to the northwest of Madrid. The Old City of Avila, with its churches outside the walls, was founded in the 11th century to protect the Spanish territories from the Moors. The historic centre and its walls were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
What we are going to do?
The Avila and Segovia tour starts with a guided tour in Avila where we will discover the history, curiosities and legends of the best preserved urban walled enclosure in the world. We will visit the impressive medieval wall, the Gothic Cathedral, the Romanesque Basilica of San Vicente, the Plaza del Mercado Chico and the Baroque Convent-Church of Santa Teresa, among others. After the guided tour in Avila we can continue discovering the city at our own pace or simply enjoy the terraces and buy the typical yolks of Avila. After the visit to Avila we will continue to Segovia where the guided tour starts under the Aqueduct of Segovia and we will continue visiting the main monuments, enclaves and viewpoints: the Plaza Mayor, the spectacular Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Mirador de Canaleja or the Alcazar of Segovia. We will have some free time and, once the tour is over, we will return to Madrid.
