El Escorial and Valle de los Caídos tour from Madrid
Description
The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a complex commissioned by Philip II that includes a royal palace, a basilica, a pantheon, a library, a college and a monastery. It is located in the Spanish town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in the Region of Madrid, and was built in the 16th century between 1563 and 1584. Another place to enjoy the scenery is the Valle de los Caídos in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in Madrid. It is a monumental complex built between 1940 and 1958, during the Franco regime, as a tribute to the "heroes and martyrs of the Crusade", i.e. those who fought and died for Franco during the Civil War. It consists of a Catholic basilica, an abbey and a 150-metre-high cross perched on the top of a cliff.
