Excursion to the Ribeira Sacra through the Romanesque art from Lugo
Description
This Galician region, known as Ribeira Sacra since the 12th century, is located in the south of the province of Lugo and north of Ourense, in the centre of Galicia, around the courses of the Miño and Sil rivers. The area is dotted with Cistercian monasteries hidden among forests on both banks of the rivers, as well as wineries, fortresses, medieval bridges and abandoned villages, such as Belesar, visible only when the river flows downstream. Legend has it that Hera opened a great wound due to her jealousy of the Galician land. That wound is still open today and it is none other than the Sil canyons.
What we are going to do?
We will leave Lugo to visit four Romanesque jewels of the Ribeira Sacra: the monastery of Ferreira de Pantón, San Estebo de Ribas de Miño, San Paio de Diomondi and San Miguel de Eiré. Finally, we will visit the eco-museum Pazo de Arxeriz, which combines the exhibition spaces of the rooms inside the buildings with the natural surroundings of the estate: the gardens, the orchard, the castro and the forest. It is intended to allow visitors to alternate the indoor visit with the outdoor walk.
