Excursion to the Ribeira Sacra through the canyons of the Sil from Lugo
Description
This Galician region, known as Ribeira Sacra since the 12th century, is located in the south of the province of Lugo and north of Ourense, in the centre of Galicia, around the courses of the Miño and Sil rivers. The area is dotted with Cistercian monasteries hidden among forests on both banks of the rivers, as well as wineries, fortresses, medieval bridges and abandoned villages, such as Belesar, visible only when the river flows downstream. Legend has it that Hera opened a great wound due to her jealousy of the Galician land. That wound is still open today and it is none other than the Sil canyons.
What we are going to do?
We will leave Lugo in the direction of the Sil canyons. Once there, we will take a touristic boat ride to contemplate the whole Ribeira Sacra and the canyons. After the route along the river, we will go to a D.O. Ribeira Sacra winery. The main grape that we will be able to taste is mencia, but also godello, cultivated in terraces next to the Miño and Sil rivers, between the spectacular canyons formed by the rivers.
