Visit the Castle of Baños de la Encina, Jaén
Description
The impressive silhouette of the castle of Bury al-Hamma dominates the rural landscape of the town of Baños de la Encina. It is the best-preserved fortified complex from the Almohad period and one of the best-preserved Muslim castles in Spain. The construction of the castle was as simple as it was long-lasting. The walls are made of rammed earth with a high proportion of lime, earth, river chinese and water. It has 15 square towers that form this colossus with its peculiar oval shape. One of them, the most important, is the Torre Cristiana del Homenaje (Christian Tower of Homage). After the excavations carried out, it is possible to confirm the Muslim presence from the Emirate period, and the castle, together with others nearby, controlled the passes of the Sierra Morena and the Guadiel depression during the 12th century.
