Cultural visit from the Middle Ages to the Baroque in Baños de la Encina
Description
Baños de la Encina is located in Sierra Morena, next to the Rumblar reservoir in the province of Jaén. It has a historic quarter with many monumental buildings and one of the most impressive Caliphate castles in Spain: the medieval castle of Burgalimar, which was declared a National Monument for its historical and artistic value. The castle contrasts with the Ermita del Cristo del Llano (Chapel of the Christ of the Plain) and its chapel tower, the culmination of the purest Andalusian Baroque style. In this rococo chapel we find, from the polygonal floor plan, birds, garlands, polychrome plasterwork angels, niches, stipes, pedestals and an unimaginable number of mirrors.
What we are going to do?
We will take a one and a half hour tour of the medieval and baroque area, accompanied by a local expert guide. We will start at the best preserved Muslim castle in Europe, Bury al Hammam Castle. Inside you will find archaeological remains from the Bronze Age and even Roman times. We will continue through the beautiful medieval streets of the old town. Finally we will visit the impressive Hermitage of Jesus del Llano and its exuberant baroque Camarín, a unique example of the Andalusian baroque of the 18th century where the decoration of angels, scrolls, birds, saints and mirrors that illuminate the whole room, makes the visitor travel to a unique paradise in the province of Jaén.
