Jewish Girona guided tour
Description
Girona is considered the "Mother City of Israel". Its medieval Jewish quarter is one of the best preserved in Europe. Located in the heart of the city, it is full of ancient remains from its Roman and medieval past. Popularly known as "El Call", this area was home to 1,000 inhabitants during the Middle Ages, making it one of the most important Jewish communities in the history of Spain. As we explore the beautiful narrow streets of the Jewish quarter, birthplace of the medieval Kabbalistic philosopher Nahmanides, we will visit the sites where the 3 synagogues of the city were located and discover all about the customs and traditions of the Jewish people thanks to a guided visit to the Museum of the History of the Jewish Community, where we will learn more about their way of life. Finally our guide will take us through the labyrinthine streets while explaining some details about the history of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, an act that ended 600 years of coexistence.
