Hiking in the Pyrenees: discover the Nuria Valley, in Girona
Description
The Vall de Núria is a spectacular valley with incredible landscapes and natural beauty. It is located in the Pyrenees, in the north of Catalonia and very close to the French border. It is 1964 metres above sea level and is surrounded by peaks of almost 3,000 metres high, from which many springs and rivers flow. In the midst of this natural setting, we find the Sanctuary of Mare de Déu de Núria, from which many of its legends and its religious and cultural significance originate, as the place is also a centre of pilgrimage thanks to the historic sanctuary. It is also one of the most emblematic sites in Catalan hiking. The natural environment, surrounded by peaks, wooded areas and high mountain vegetation, completes the description of this unique space.
What we are going to do?
We will meet in a central point of Barcelona to start our experience. After a 2-hour van ride we will arrive at the beautiful village of Queralbs, the gateway to the Vall de Núria, only accessible by the rack railway or on foot. From this point our hiking route will begin. To access the Nuria Valley, which is at about 2000 metres, we will follow the "Old Queralbs to Núria Way", one of the most iconic hiking routes in Catalan hiking. This path, which was used for centuries by pilgrims as an access route to the Sanctuary, is a path full of history and legends. The route passes through unique places such as the "Rocas del Dui" or the spectacular waterfall "La Cola de Caballo" and offers spectacular views of the valley. During the walk, we will learn about the distinctive flora and fauna of the Pyrenees and, if we are lucky, we will be able to see some wild animals such as griffon vultures, chamois, golden eagles or marmots in their natural habitat. We will also have time to have lunch and discover the area of the Sanctuary and surroundings at our own pace and finally, we will descend from the valley by taking the iconic rack railway, a route of great beauty that covers 12.5 km and overcomes a drop of more than 1,000 metres to Queralbs.
