Full day excursion to Girona and Besalú
Description
The labyrinthine layout and medieval flavour of its streets, its steep staircases, its great historical contribution and, above all, its firm commitment to recovering the old quarter of "El Call" make the Jewish quarter of Girona a unique and fascinating place. The county town of Besalú preserves a unique Jewish heritage site in Catalonia: a 12th century "Mikveh" and the remains of a synagogue dating from the 13th century. In 1966, Besalú was declared a National Historic and Artistic Site. Since then, many discoveries have been made that have led to a magnificent recovery of the town's heritage. Its medieval streets with their irregular layout, the arches, the stairways, the stone houses and the superb Romanesque bridge that leads to the town centre over the waters of the River Fluvià. Everything in Besalú retains the charm of a time when this small town in the county of La Garrotxa was part of a prosperous and powerful county.
