Hiking route around the Pico de la Zarza, the highest point on the island of Fuerteventura
Description
Pico de la Zarza, the highest point on the island, is located in the Jandía Natural Park, a territory of more than 14,000 hectares, which covers a large part of the south of the island. Its privileged location, more than eight hundred metres above sea level, allows, on clear days, breathtaking views. The climb up to the Pico de la Zarza gives a new profile of this arid island. The landscape is rich in contrasts and changes its textures and colours.
What we are going to do?
After the pick-up at the accommodation, we will go to the starting point of the route, which allows us to climb the Pico de la Zarza, the highest mountain of Fuerteventura. With its 807 metres, it is located in the south of the island and within the natural park of Jandía. It is known by the Majoreros as Oreja Burro (Donkey's Ear) because, together with the Pico de la Palma, from a distance it is reminiscent of the shape of the ears of this animal. Climbing up the leeward side we will find some steep sections, but once we reach the top we will have spectacular views. After a rest we will start the return to the starting point, which is done along the same path. The difficulty is medium-high.
