Day trip and visit to Peñiscola Castle

On this excursion to Peñíscola we will visit the Artillery Park, now a botanical park, El bufador, a large hole between the rocks through which the sea water rises abruptly on stormy days. We will visit the castle, see the Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells) and also enter the Museum of the Sea. We will learn about its history and enjoy its steep and narrow streets full of history. The city is situated on a tombolo, a rocky peninsula, originally joined to the land only by a sandy isthmus, which made it easy to defend, although it was occasionally flooded and buried under the sea water. Nowadays, due to the construction of the port and the buildings on the isthmus, this curious fact has disappeared. On the rock rises the old town, from which the castle of Papa Luna stands out, dividing the coast of Peñíscola into two completely different halves. There are wide beaches both to the north and south of the castle peninsula. The municipality of Peñíscola includes one of the most unspoilt coastal mountain ranges on the Valencian coast, the Sierra de Irta, which ends at the sea on a low rocky coastline with high cliffs at some points, such as the Badum.
