Excursion to Ghent from Brussels
Description
Ghent, the city where Charles I of Spain and V of Germany were born. One of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, it is full of history, canals and monuments. In the 16th century it was the second most populated city in Europe, only behind Paris, which is why it has such a monumental historic centre. You will get to know both the cultural and current affairs of the country through this fantastic full day experience.
What we are going to do?
The experience starts at 8.30 am from the centre of Brussels, where you will meet your guide. We will head straight to the beautiful and powerful city of Ghent, only 1 hour drive from the capital. First of all, we will discover the Ghent City Hall, a huge building with a complex facade, which looks like two buildings, but it is only an optical illusion. One of Ghent's three famous towers belongs to St. Bavo's Cathedral, another stop on our tour. Inside the cathedral, the undisputed protagonist is the altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers, "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb", a work that is recognised worldwide as a masterpiece. The second tower is the bell tower of Ghent, standing proudly at 91 metres and holding the symbol of the city, the dragon, at its peak. We will visit the Wheat Market on the Main Square, a square not only full of history, but also a monumental place, surrounded by fantastic architecture. Nearby we will find the Church of St. Nicholas, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture and where we will be able to see the third of the towers. We cannot leave Ghent without walking along the Gaslei and Korenlei, the canals of the old port of Ghent, a magnificent place to sit and watch the city and its people. Other places to visit include the large Meat Market and the only surviving medieval castle in Ghent, where we can see the remains of its defensive system. It is the oldest castle of its kind in Flanders. The tour ends with 4 hours free time to have lunch and explore the city at our leisure before returning to Brussels.
