Tickets for the Recinto Modernista Sant Pau in Barcelona
Description
A city within a city. Sant Pau is the largest Art Nouveau complex in the world (it occupies approximately 9 blocks) and is also the most important work of the modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site was born of the visionary work of the architect Domènech i Montaner. In the early 1900s, he envisioned a hospital that would help not only the patients physically but also their minds. He saw the need to create a cheerful and inspiring environment. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its uniqueness and artistic beauty, the Art Nouveau Site is configured as an architectural ensemble made up of 12 pavilions surrounded by green spaces and connected by a kilometre of underground galleries. Mosaics, domes, cheerful lines and polychrome tiles characterise this unique building. You can also discover the underground tunnels that connect each building.
What we are going to do?
On your visit to the site, you will start in the Sala Hipóstila, which housed the Hospital's old emergency room. Through the tunnels, you will reach the Sant Salvador Pavilion, the first building to come into operation in 1916. Here you can learn about the history of the former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and discover the work and career of Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The visit continues in the gardens. Strolling among the flowers and plants, you will see how nature was a source of modernist inspiration and a fundamental tool for healing the sick. What was life like in this hospital environment in the 1920s? And what kind of medicine was practised in Barcelona? You will find out by visiting the House of Operations and the Sant Rafael Pavilion, which houses a historical recreation and the exhibition Operations 'Patient and doctor, from narration to objectivity'. The tour ends at the Administration Pavilion, the most outstanding building of the whole complex. You will be surprised by the different heritage rooms, full of light, colours, mosaics, sculptures and a wealth of decoration.
