Description
The Zaanse Schans Windmill Village is an open-air museum housing a collection of old working windmills, wooden houses, barns and shops dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. In its golden age, the Zaan region where the village of Zaanse Schans is located became an industrial area on a scale never seen before, with 600 active windmills. Windmills are wind-powered wooden factories. In these small factories, many tasks were carried out with the help of wind power: wood sawn by machines, grinding spices, food oil and paint, flowers, cocoa powder and many other things. The prosperity of the 18th and 19th centuries can be seen in the village in various ways. Alongside the mills, barns and other buildings, there are beautiful houses that were originally built as homes for wealthy mill owners and merchants. These houses have attractive facades and have been painted in traditional colours such as green, beige and light blue.
What we are going to do?
From a central meeting point in Amsterdam, we will take a short bus ride (20-30 minutes) to the windmill village Zaanse Schans. Here we will experience everything that is typically Dutch in just a few hours. A friendly, professional and experienced tour guide will accompany us throughout the whole experience. First he will take us on an orientation tour through the village and we will see the historic windmills in operation on a guided tour. We will then go on two very special visits. The first will be the Clog Museum, which is also a workshop for the production of typical Dutch wooden shoes. There we will observe how traditional craftsmen make clogs and other wooden artefacts. Next we will visit a traditional cheese farm where we will learn about cheese production and have a cheese tasting. Finally we will continue exploring the village on our own to discover the colourfully painted traditional houses and shops, before returning to Amsterdam.
