Excursion to Volendam, Edam and Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam
Description
Escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam on a guided tour of the Dutch countryside, starting with a visit to the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. This preserved open-air area is situated on the banks of the Zaan river and is home to original architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, including several still-functioning windmills and wooden houses. Take in the beautiful scenery of the province of North Holland and explore the beautiful village of Edam, also commonly known as the pearl of the old Zuiderzee. Edam's old streets and quiet canals are flanked by beautiful 17th century buildings, such as the leaning Carillon tower, the Great Church and the old town hall. Edam's most famous landmark is undoubtedly the public weigh house, where the famous Edam Cheese Market still takes place every year in July and August. Finally, discover the traditional seaside village of Volendam. This typical fishing village with its bustling harbour has been a major tourist attraction since early 1875. People come from all over the world to see the little houses and meet the locals with their traditions and traditional Dutch costumes.
What we are going to do?
We will take a trip to the province of Noord-Holland to learn first-hand and accompanied by a local guide about all the traditions of the Dutch countryside. We will watch a live demonstration of the wood craftsmen of Zaanse Schans, including a clog maker who makes the famous wooden shoes of the Netherlands. Free time to explore the village and visit some of the windmills on your own before travelling through the typical polder landscape. Then, after a stroll through the historic village of Edam, we will have the opportunity to see how the world famous Edam cheese is made. And, of course, to taste some cheese at a nearby cheese farm. Finally, the guide will take us on a short walk through the oldest parts of the fishing village of Volendam, exploring beautiful nooks and crannies until we reach places of interest such as St. Vincent's Church, the wooden Stolphoevekerk and the fish auction. We can also enjoy a walk along the top of the Dyke with a beautiful view of the Ijsselmeer lake.
