Day trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
Description
Holland is known for its picturesque landscapes, and some of the best places to visit are around the capital. One of the most beautiful and a must-see is Zaanse Schans, known mainly for its iconic windmills. What was once Western Europe's first industrial area is now a beautiful historic area with well-preserved buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Another must-see is Volendam, a bustling fishing village that has become a quiet harbour popular with tourists. Its traditional fishermen's houses lined along the harbour, its narrow alleys and its authentic Dutch cheese produced in the region are just some of its charms. Edam and Marken complete this tour of the Dutch countryside, traditional old fishing villages that are well worth a visit for their proximity to the capital.
What we are going to do?
The tour lasts 6.5 hours, in a small group of a maximum of 15 people, accompanied by a guide for the entire duration of the tour. A bus will pick us up at an agreed meeting point near Amsterdam Central Station. Our first stop will be at Zaanse Schans, a beautiful place full of traditional windmills still in operation, wooden houses and barns, where we can enjoy a walk as if it were an open-air museum and where we can take beautiful and original souvenir photographs. Afterwards our bus will head to the Waterland area to marvel at a series of dreamy villages that make this Dutch region famous: Edam, Volendam and Marken. In Edam we will stroll through historic sites such as the square where the famous cheese market used to take place. Then, near Volendam, we will visit a local cheese producer, where we will learn about the process of making Gouda and Edam cheese. We will also visit a clog factory where we will discover the secrets of this typical Dutch shoe. Finally, we will travel back to the 17th century as we stroll among Marken's cosy fishermen's houses, its beautiful fishing harbour and its church.
